ASSOCIATION LEADERSHIP AWARD
Association of Corporate Treasurers – Caroline Stockmann
Caroline Stockmann has transformed the ACT since she joined as Chief Executive in 2017. Recruited to turn around the organisation financially, and grow it internationally, she moved it from substantial deficits to surplus pre-COVID. She was the first non-treasurer and woman in role, tasked to run a business whilst bringing its vision and mission alive. Caroline has achieved many things personally (see full nomination), and even more has been achieved through the team she leads – digital credentials and on-demand assessments, innovative award-winning events and marketing, apprenticeship schemes for treasury, and other member-value-adding initiatives. Caroline herself led significant changes in qualifications delivery, holding us in good stead during COVID, has brought diversity and inclusion in treasury to the fore, has worked relentlessly in sharing her own finance and coaching experience to help support others’ personal development, and has grown our impact internationally – with our last live Middle East Treasury Summit (2019) growing 33% year-on-year. Through COVID Caroline ensured our (naturally risk-averse) Council held its nerve – and was awarded an Honorary FCT by them this year! If asked, however, Caroline would always talk about her brilliant and effective team, how we work together so collegiately, and are closer today.
Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers – Fiona Campbell
Founded in 1978, the Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers (ASSC) are the leading source of knowledge on short-term letting and holiday homes in Scotland and are the only trade body representing the interests of the traditional self-catering sector.
The ASSC’s purpose is ‘to represent and promote the interests of all self-catering accommodation businesses in Scotland’. Our vision is to place our members at the forefront of a professional, vibrant and prosperous Scottish self-catering sector.
I have worked hard to ensure that the ASSC is seen as an exemplary organisation, being seen as an effective organisation that leads in its field with the highest standards of governance, highly skilled staff and a culture of innovation.
Under my leadership, the ASSC’s focus is promoting Scottish self-catering as sustainable, inclusive, responsible accommodation, which supports individuals, businesses and communities at its heart.
The ASSC fights the corner of its members, kept them informed of unfolding developments, and engaged with leading tourism stakeholders, MSPs and the Scottish Government to ensure the best outcome possible for our sector.
British Compressed Gases Association – Ellen Daniels
Driving change in a well-established traditional trade association is a challenge for any new CEO – but for 29-year-old Ellen Daniels, that challenge was compounded when she took up her first CEO role at the British Compressed Gases Association in February 2020.
With Covid-19 placing the gas industry firmly under the spotlight – in particular in its outstanding work to deliver oxygen to hospitals and healthcare environments in the crisis – the BCGA was at the heart of the industry in its response.
Increasing the influence of the Association, driving member engagement and dealing with the major challenges of Covid-19 and Brexit have so far been the hallmark of Ellen’s leadership.
Ellen has also introduced digital innovation, a focus on diversity and overseen a major public health campaign. The compressed gases industry was known as “the invisible industry”, and in just two years, Ellen’s work has culminated in the BCGA being dubbed “one of the most important trade associations in the country”, by Lord Bilimoria CBE, President of the CBI and founder of Cobra Beer.
British Society for Allergy & Clinical Immunology – Leadership Team
Allergy is a major issue in the UK, more research is needed to understand why allergy is so prevalent in developed countries. In 2018 BSACI was successful in a bid to host a joint international allergy meeting with the World Allergy Organization (WAO).
The meeting focused on our collaborations with national and international societies, as the issues we have are on a global scale. The collaboration and combined expertise of BSACI and WAO, alongside the support of our sister societies guaranteed us a global collaboration of true scientific magnitude. Global experts spoke on the effects of environment on allergy, covering huge issues on the effect of pollution, the climate, helminths and viruses on allergy. Evidence was presented showing those from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds are more likely to be exposed to related risks of COVID and how these issues could be tackled effectively globally. We invited other international societies and associations from Japan, American and Europe to share their allergy expertise.
The meeting closed with a big bang once in a life-time presentation that highlighted advances and breakthroughs in biologics, anaphylaxis, immunotherapy and everything that has the potential to change our clinical practice on a global scale forever.
Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales – Duncan Wiggetts
Showing leadership in the fight against economic crime ICAEW’s initiative to highlight the importance of accountants staying vigilant in the fight against economic crime through the creation, launch and distribution of an educational drama film, All Too Familiar has demonstrated strong leadership within the sector.
The initiative, led by ICAEW’s Professional Standards Chief Officer, Duncan Wiggetts, evolved into a unique private/public partnership between ICAEW and HMRC with both bodies distributing the film and training materials free to all their supervised UK firms following a high-profile launch event in March 2022. The impact of the initiative has already exceeded all expectations with over 7,800 streams of the film in the first 8 weeks, very positive feedback from ICAEW Chartered Accountants and firms, and endorsements from the highest levels of government and a leading human trafficking charity.
And the initiative is going global. Two of the largest international accountancy networks have requested licences to use the film throughout their global networks for staff training (with more on the way). This will carry the film’s important messages around the world. The proceeds of international licences will generate funding for further films to allow ICAEW to continue to lead in this area.
