British Horse Society – British Horse
For members of the British Horse Society (BHS) the pandemic was a hugely challenging time Many horse owners of years’ standing were obliged to radically change their equine management practices, as well as provide care at short notice to horses that were not their own Never had the support of the BHS been so vital, nor the role of British Horse magazine so crucial to its mission to disseminate gold-standard knowledge and advice.
Key insights from calls to the BHS welfare helpline revealed that:
● Supporting the mental wellbeing of equestrians themselves was critical to helping them to care for their horses
● There were big gaps in owners’ knowledge They didn’t always understand what their horse’s behaviour might mean
● Members needed the know-how to advise others how to care for their horses in the event that they were incapacitated / self-isolating
And so the editorial approach for British Horse magazine pivoted in response, becoming more focused than ever on the need to support the mental wellbeing of BHS members so that they can deliver high-quality care to their horses.
