INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF THE YEAR
Alliance for Rural Electrification
The Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE) is the global association for the decentralised renewable energy (DRE) industry, catalysing private sector-driven markets for sustainable electricity services, creating jobs and powering equitable green economies.
ARE enables improved energy access through business development support for more than 185 Members along the whole value chain for off-grid technologies.
Despite the COVID pandemic and ARE’s commitment to support last-mile businesses delivering services to some of the poorest consumers across developing countries, ARE had an astounding growth in 2021, most notably thanks to a dynamic, motivated young and capable team and a strong link with ARE’s members and constituency.
The below figures give an indication of how impressive ARE’s growth in 2021 was:
• 67 new members joined the association in 2021 (+36% YoY)
• ~70% YoY increase in annual turnover
• 5 new additional staff to a growing team
• Gender balance within the ARE Board and Secretariat
ARE announced its firm commitment on behalf of the DRE industry to achieve:
– Sustainable electricity services to at least 500 million additional people
– Catalysing the creation of at least 5 million green jobs
– Avoiding at least 1 billion tonnes of CO2e emissions by 2030
American Chamber of Commerce to the EU
AmCham EU speaks for over 160 American companies committed to Europe on trade, investment and competitiveness issues. It aims to ensure a growth-orientated business and investment climate. It facilitates the resolution of transatlantic issues that impact business and plays a role in creating a better understanding of EU and US positions on business matters.
For American companies invested in Europe, 2021 has left cause for cautious optimism with regard to the transatlantic relationship. In this most eventful of years, AmCham EU has continued to make the case for the EU-US relationship; multilateralism; and a rules-based international system underpinned by strong and functional institutions. We are confident to say that we have kept a high pace into 2022 and successfully deliver on the set-out objectives.
European Cancer Organisation
Founded 40 years ago with the mission of improving outcomes for cancer patients via multi-disciplinarity, since 2020 ECO has implemented a significant strategic change in delivery of its mission. Clarifying mission delivery via a two pillar strategy of (a) representation and (b) convening, the creation of 10 Focused Topic Network has created a platform for advocacy success, new levels of member value and collective achievement of EU support for change-making projects.
As set out in the submission for the Award, key outputs of this strategy that we put forward for attention include:
– Key influence upon multiple areas of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, including success in securing an EU goal for eliminating HPV cancers
– The pan-national ‘Time to Act’ campaign to draw political attention to the needs of cancer services and patients during the Covid-19 pandemic
– The co-creation between healthcare professionals and patients of the European Code of Cancer Practice to empower patients and their care givers
– The rapid creation of an international network of NGOs and others to support Ukrainian cancer patients following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In submitting this application we thank all our members and others who have made all described possible.

Our mission at IHA is to advance the role of sustainable hydropower in addressing climate change and supporting responsible freshwater management. We seek to deliver on our mission through advocacy, research and policy initiatives and championing sustainable good practices.
Since being awarded International Association of the Year at last year’s Association Excellence Awards, IHA has taken bold new steps to amplify the message that sustainable hydropower is essential to the clean energy transition. The past year has seen a revamped membership model, the launch of the first sustainability Standard in the renewables sector, a radical sector-redefining statement in the San José Declaration on Sustainable Hydropower, a major report on Pumped Storage Hydro supported by almost 100 organisations, and a ground-breaking industry commitment on protection of World Heritage Sites.
Nautilus International
Nautilus International is the trade union for maritime professionals at sea and ashore, representing 20,000 workers.
In what has been another hugely challenging year for seafarers, Nautilus International has continued to be agile, grown its presence, stepped up as the voice of maritime professionals and provided more hugely important support to its members.
Over the past year, provision from Nautilus has been hugely important for seafarers across the globe. With the COVID-19 pandemic, war in Ukraine, and wider industry issues continuing to cause significant challenges, communication, support, advice and campaigning has been critical to seafarers.
Nautilus has ensured it is doing everything it can to aid members, maintaining service standards across all casework despite a surge in requests, ensuring that its communication channels are fit for purpose, up to date and valuable for members wherever they are, successfully lobbied governments and stakeholders to make legislative changes to the benefit of members and the wider industry and championed member interests and secured results in instances of unfair treatment.
Union for International Cancer Control
UICC is a well respected global health NGO based in Geneva, Switzerland. It has 1200 members organisations in more than 170 countries. In addition to being an effective global advocate and supporting its membership around the world, UICC runs the World Cancer Congress, the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit and World Cancer Day. In the last year, despite the pandemic, UICC has run a successful online Summit in partnership with three UN agencies, launched a new World Cancer Day 3-year theme, “Close the Care Gap” and has received its highest scores from its membership base survey conducted at the end of 2021. In May 2022, following a year of intense negotiation, UICC launched its fifth organisation in 13 years, bringing together 26 organisations as the Access to Oncology Medicines (ATOM) Coalition. This completely innovative coalition will transform the way in which the health community and private sector work together to increase the availability of essential cancer medicines in low and lower-middle income countries.
