Chartered Association of Business Schools
In a period of restricted funding for business schools, the Chartered ABS has successfully advanced its aims of supporting and championing business schools for the benefit of business and society.
We have shifted the conversation in government, having been a lead partner in a successful bid for £5m Research England funding for a project to develop the business awareness of doctoral and early career researchers, and improve the exchange of expertise between universities and industry.
We secured the continuation of the Help to Grow: Management programme funding, against a background of government cuts. Research by Ipsos, highlights the impact the course has had on UK businesses (e.g. two thirds felt their leadership and management skills improved). For our growing network of 3,846 course alumni, we have delivered a new ‘Alumni Hub’, offering resources, partnerships, and networking opportunities for ongoing learning.
Following a change in leadership after our CEO of 7 years left post, we implemented an interim leadership team to ensure the continuation and expansion of our content production and events calendar. Alongside this change in leadership, we have doubled in size of personnel this year, offering us a much greater capacity to advance the aims of the association.
Federation of Awarding Bodies
This past year has been one of exceptional organisational achievement and pride for the Federation of Awarding Bodies. We’ve delivered record growth in membership, through a passionate and dedicated team of just 8 employees. In the post-16 education and skills sector we are the smallest peak-level association, yet, the span of our work, from UK-wide policy influencing and membership support services to major industry events, is on par with trade bodies in the space who are between 4 and 10 ten times our size. One of the reasons we can ‘punch above our weight’ is the way we utilise our democratically elected 12-strong board of unpaid directors. From the co-chairs down, directors are expected to adopt an area of policy; or lead an internal business transformation project, by working productively with the executive team to engage the wider membership and deliver real change. Over the past 12 months, we have worked on significant strategic projects such as the EDI action plan for the awarding and assessment industry, and have relaunched the Awarding and Assessment Academy with a new Industry Career Framework, to support, develop and professionally recognise those working in awarding and assessment.
